UPDATE JUNE 2003
PRESS
RELEASE BLUE FLAG AWARD 2003
The
Fowey Harbour Commissioners are pleased to confirm the announcement by the Blue Flag
Campaign 2003 Committee that effective from 5th June
2003 Fowey Harbour has been awarded the Blue Flag Designation.
For
a number of years, blue flags have been awarded to beaches meeting the high standards
necessary for this award distinction.
This
was extended to Marinas and for the first time a port has been awarded the award
under this criteria.
After
a rigorous inspection, the National and International Blue Flag Juries decided that
Fowey met all of the standards, which include Environmental Education and Information,
Environmental Management, Water Quality and Safety and Services.
As
part of their endeavours to manage the Harbour and Estuary at the highest environmental
standard to keep it clean and to operate it safely, The Harbour Commissioners will
be proud for the Port to fly the Blue Flag for the forthcoming year and will be endeavouring
to improve on the services, thus keeping the designation awarded to the Port.
New
initiatives introduced this year include recycling of waste from the leisure craft
using the Harbour, together with those already introduced in the commercial sector.
Boat
owners will be encouraged to individually submit their boat operation for Blue Flag
Designation.
Both
national and foreign owners are eligible for these individual Blue Flags.
The
Harbour Commissioners believe that this recognition will assist them in maintaining
the high standards that they have achieved. It will further encourage visitors both
in the leisure and commercial sector and particularly the cruise line sector to use
the port facilities and enjoy a safe and happy stay in our beautiful port. We
look forward to working closely with all of the various organisations and businesses
in and around the Port of Fowey in this endeavour to promote our region. These include
County and Local Authorities, Southwest water, The environment agency and many others.

CRUISE
SHIPS TO BRING HUGE REVENUE TO SOUTH WEST
Destination
SouthWests most successful seminar was held at Pendennis Castle on Thursday
20th March. Sixty-five delegates from in and around Falmouth came to hear Director
of Cruise Operations Bob Harrison explain how businesses can give disembarking cruise
passengers an unforgettable experience and how that experience will produce a lucrative
return.
In
the year since DSW was set up by the 18 partners of seven ports, local councils and
attractions, the number of cruise ships calling at Falmouth has risen from 23 to
49. Mike Reynolds, Operations Manager for the Port, gave attendees a list of the
names and dates the ships will visit in 2003, starting with the Black Prince on 21st
March.
Bob
Harrison said that because service on board ship is of the highest standard, passengers
expect the same level of attention once they step ashore, so businesses must be ready
with a smile and all the information which might be required from offering
dollars and euros, to knowledge of shipping procedures and evening opening on Sundays
or for late shopping if a cruise ship arrives out of normal business hours.
